Behind the nurses’ station on the labor and delivery floor of Cité-de-la-Santé sits a large screen displaying several graphs which appear in real time. These graphs do not represent the curves of stock market trends, but rather the heartbeats of the babies who will enter the world over the next few hours. 

Implementation of the CALM (Computer Aided Labor Monitoring) system is a symbol of the technological revolution. Gone are the monitors that spit out a kilometer’s worth of graphs. Nurses can now monitor the labor of all of their moms-to-be with a single glance.  In addition to fetal heart rate, the nurses can see data regarding contractions, as well as notes taken during examinations.
