Monitoring contractions and fetal heart rate (FHR) response is an integral part of OB care for women in labor, particularly when that labor is induced or augmented. Clinicians must carefully monitor changes in the mother’s labor progress, the strength of her contractions, and the baby’s reaction to her contractions over long periods of time, to assure the best outcome.

Once considered more of an art than a science, labor monitoring is a complex process which is highly subjective and prone to human error.
