Advanced Clinical Decision Support for Obstetrics
Anchored by the PeriBirth clinical decision support system for OB, PeriGen’s solutions were developed to assist clinicians in providing the safest obstetrical care possible. Investing more than 375 physician work years in advanced decision support development, PeriGen is the only company in the world supporting over 400,000 births with a clinical decision support system.
Yoni Barnhard, MD, Chair of the Department of OB/Gyn and Director of Maternal & Child Health at Norwalk Hospital speaks on decision support and patient safety.
As the first-mover and leader in OB patient safety, we provide proven, integrated solutions that reduce OB errors, complications, and risk. PeriBirth’s modules include:
- Real-time, advanced clinical decision support for OB
- Multi-disciplinary, highly structured documentation system for the OB specialty
- Evidence-based practice protocols for all care providers
- Fetal monitoring, archiving and surveillance
- Interfaces with specialty and hospital systems (e.g., EMR, CPOE, ADT, Lab systems, Pharmacy) spanning prenatal, antepartum, labor and delivery and postpartum care
- Patient safety and risk management consultancy with quarterly review of performance dashboards trended and benchmarked against national standards and peer hospitals within the PeriGen client base
Standards-based Patient Care
The PeriBirth solution includes an advanced perinatal clinical decision support system supported by a full range of professional OB clinical consulting and advisory services. At the heart of the solution is a Knowledgebase of 6,500 protocols and best practices as delineated by the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and The Joint Commission.
By comparing the care ordered against published standards of care, PeriBirth recommends alternative care plans that incorporate best practice protocols for each patient, based on that patient's specific clinical condition as it changes over time. By analyzing changes in patterns of care and the patient’s condition—in real time—the PeriBirth system has prevented a clinically significant error in over 10% of deliveries.
Patient Safety and Positive Clinical Outcomes
PeriBirth addresses the root causes behind preventable medical errors: errors of communication and errors of cognition. PeriBirth alerts clinicians to a potentially significant contraindication in 1 in 5 deliveries. Because it monitors the changing condition of the patient in real time, PeriBirth identifies orders that are no longer appropriate or need to be modified.
Objective Quality Indicators
PeriBirth generates detailed metrics and trend reporting that support quality improvement programs. Each hospital’s critical clinical outcomes are benchmarked against national trends as well as against peer hospitals within PeriGen’s client base. PeriBirth’s extensive report sets give clinicians a unique view of departmental as well as individual clinician performance and provide an objective foundation supporting continuous quality improvement. In addition to receiving standard reports and quarterly dashboard reports, PeriBirth clients can generate ad hoc reports through the PeriTrack™ reporting tool. PeriTrack allows clients “on demand” access to data to meet their specific reporting needs.
Flexible Integration
PeriBirth was developed to be flexible in its technical, implementation, and interface requirements. Its core capabilities include the ability to manage workflow and define clinical process rules, data requirements, assessment protocols, and screens dynamically. PeriBirth’s advanced interfacing and rules-based tools accommodate the unique needs of each hospital customer. PeriBirth offers mobility and remote consultation capabilities to meet the logistical and data needs of physicians and the special needs of patients who require consultation with specialists.
Immediate Clinical and Financial Impact
Better clinical outcomes yield better financial outcomes. PeriBirth’s impact can be measured in four key areas:
- Measurable improvement in clinical outcomes benchmarked against national standards and peer hospitals
- Documented claims reduction and decrease in medical malpractice reserves
- Quantifiable revenue increase resulting from improved documentation and charge capture
- Measurable increase in productivity due to streamlined administration and less “rework;” accurate documentation and compliance; and improvement in patient care quality parameters
In maternity care, the US is the second lowest-ranked industrialized nation in the world, leading only Estonia.
